….. because I don't have a turntable that will play at 78 RPM. I'm considering getting a little Crosley portable so that I can pick up a few 78s. I recently got a box of records that had some old 78s in it, mostly old country music, but there was one that I was interested in - Santa Baby by Eartha Kitt. I thought it would be cool to keep that one, but when I pulled it out of the paper sleeve it had a big chip in it like a slice taken from a pizza. Oh well….
Back in the day - like in the early 1950's my dad, uncle and grandfather recorded a record at the shore of them singing. Remember how back in the 1980's you could record your own karaoke tape in a booth at the mall? You used to be able to do that with records too, except you would just sing a capella. I remember it was a little 7" record but played at 78. He wants me to convert it to an MP3 for him.
Do any of you have 78s?

My dad has some but I never got them because I don't have a turntable that will play them. I would love to get one. There are tons of old country 78s I would love to get and most are cheap.

I don't own any 78's. But I would love to find any old Leadbelly 78's! Hell I would even take 12" re-pressings.

As I posted in another thread, I picked up the Dual 1019 and it spins at 16/33/45/78 speed options. I picked up a couple of 78s at Goodwill on my way home. I can't explain what it's like to hear these old records. There's just something about them. Very warm sounding. Anyway here's a shot of my table about to spin RIders in the Sky.

As far as I know you need to swap out the cartridge for one that is specifically made for 78 records. You don't want to damage both the records and your needle!

True - the store that I bought the Dual from said that there already is a 78 stylus on the turntable. I want to get a Shure M78S cartridge for this table so I can just make it my 78 player. Playing these old records is like opening up a time capsule.

You're so right Bill. There is something about the 78's that is hard to explain. After much research I purchased an Audio Technica LP120USB. However I was looking for a decent table to pull double duty so that might not fit what you're looking for. I have several 78's that were inherited over the years. None really collectable but a lot of fun to play. My favorite is a 12 inch 78 of Mendellsshon's "Hebrides Overture" OR "Fingal's Cave". If you happen to be old enough to remember Warner Bros. Inky cartoons, this was the piece of music WB used as the mynah bird hopped along.

I know a little bit of old animation, mostly fleischer brothers stuff. Never heard of Inky though. I picked up a 78 of a song called "I'm Old But I'm Awfully Tough" and it's been in my head for a few days now. I recently traded a buddy of mine a punk record for a few rock and R&B 78s, they're in pretty rough shape, but they should play.

I have a few dozen 78s, Bill. Nothing all that special value-wise. The one I treasure the most is "Dear One" b/w "I've Lost" by The Scarlets on Red Robin Records. The Scarlets' lead singer was Fred Parris, before the 5 Satins were formed. Mr. P autographed the sleeve for me back in the mid-1980's. Also have "This Could Be The Night" by The Velours on Onyx Records (yep, I used to collect doo-wop). On the jazz side of things, there's "Things To Come" - Dizzy Gillespie Big Band on Musicraft. I found a pile of 78 acetates at Renninger's years ago - some big band things and a few oddball discs.
I use a Rheem Califone to play them. Granted, it's not a very good 'table but it does kick out a lot of sound due to the internal tube amp and the external speaker keeps feedback out of the picture..
